The Town Green
Happy with what I already have
Right now
In this present moment
I am working hard, every day
Burning and striving and being patient
But I do have enough
Even when things aren't perfect
Even when it's too cold or sweltering hot
I don't have to have more or something greater than what's right in front of me
I don't require things I don't have already
I appreciate what I do have
Respect what I've worked for
And am thankful for those who've helped me along the way
And know there are many surprises and disappointments yet to come
I am good
And I wish you well
It's just a strip of well-maintained grass
In the exact center of town
With one-way and a line of parking on the side by the shops
And the main road on the other
The slow ache
A silent glow
And the steady beating
Of a life being lived
Generous thoughts of where we were and what's up next
Past, present, and future in contented still
It's time for rest and refelction
To grow and lengthen ourselves
Not to push too hard
To make it feel just right
So we'll be back again for more
This time and many more
We know it feels just right
Coming on again and back
A twinge of excitement for more
That we just don't need right now
Strike a balance in feeling good
And doing well
Picnic tables, benches, and a small gazebo
Allow visitors to lounge about and have lunch
Beneath two rows of shady maple trees
That the town adorns with lights in the winter
We do not act in secret
Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world
Unbelief, hate and ignorance
The world will always see what it wants to see
Our time will come
Our moment, big or small
Will be remembered by us
And anyone else we may be with
The unbelief is found in those who do not know
Or don't care to find out
Or casually don't care
The hate is from those who know it will go away soon
Those who fear and resent
Those who are different
The ignorance is something not heard by the secret
Not found close-by
Not wanting to know more
But they will hear
Our moment will come
When we avoid secrecy and deception
When we are public and proud
Our moment will be great
There is a pie shop that's also a breakfast cafe, a fine arts gallery, a news office, a regular cafe, and old, sprawling, enormous hotel, a handmade gift shop, a rug store, and three churches are all within a five minute walking distance
Be loud and proud
The humble braggart
Letting our good work
Go unnoticed
Swallowed in the sea
Of voices to help and hurt
Firm in what we stand for
Our message
Well-received
Polite and honest
Thorough and prepared
It's not just the actions
Or the words
It takes a full approach
To be happy
And successful
